Born in 1966 in Batna, Abdelmalek Yahia is an Algerian visual artist, designer, and scenographer. A graduate of the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts d'Alger, where he also earned a master's degree in design before teaching there as an assistant professor, he has developed a singular pictorial body of work since the late 1980s, one in which abstraction, matter, and spatial construction converge in a sensitive visual language.
His career took on an international dimension as early as 1989 with the Algiers International Biennial of Fine Arts, followed in 1994 by the Biennial of Young Creators of Europe and the Mediterranean in Lisbon. In 2003, his work was presented in Paris as part of the Year of Algeria in France, notably at UNESCO and the Cité internationale des Arts.
Alongside his visual art practice, Abdelmalek Yahia has built a significant career as a scenographer in theater, exhibition design, and audiovisual production, collaborating with several major figures of Algerian theater. His work as a scenographer has been recognized on multiple occasions, notably at the Carthage Festival in Tunisia and the Arab Theatre Festival in Jordan.
Through a practice at the crossroads of painting, design, and scenography, Abdelmalek Yahia develops a coherent and rigorous body of work, in which space becomes a true territory of visual and poetic experimentation.
